"Am I E'er Gonna Come across Your Face Once more" is an Australian rock vocal written past Doctor Neeson, John Brewster and Rick Brewster,[3] and performed past their group, the Angels.[iv] [five] The song was initially recorded as a carol in March 1976 just subsequently re-released as a rock song. The vocal reached number 58 on the Australian charts and stayed on the charts for nineteen weeks.
A alive single was released in January 1988 as the lead single from Live Line. The live version features the expletive-laden audition response, "No Way, Go Fucked, Fuck Off".[vi] This dirge has been described by The Guardian 's Darryl Mason equally "one of the about famous in Australian rock history".[seven] The unmarried peaked at number 11 on the Kent Music Report.
In Jan 2018, every bit function of Triple M's "Ozzest 100", the 'about Australian' songs of all time, "Am I Always Gonna Run across Your Face Again" was ranked number 11.[eight]

Neeson said that the song was originally written as an acoustic carol nigh grief and loss. The girlfriend of Neeson'southward friend was killed in a motorbike collision, and the two friends were discussing life afterwards expiry. The conversation inspired Neeson to write the lyrics. References to subjects similar Santa Fe and Renoir came from Neeson's own experiences.[9]
Later British band Status Quo discovered numerous similarities between the song and ane of their own ("Lonely Night"), the 2 bands reached an agreement in lieu of a lawsuit that saw Condition Quo receive royalties from "Am I Ever Gonna Meet Your Face up Again".[x] Condition Quo bassist Alan Lancaster was friends with members of the Angels at the time of the incident, and lived adjacent door to John Brewster. In 2015, Brewster recounted having asked Neeson whether the vocal could've been based on "Lonely Nighttime" and recalls a non-committal response: "I might take heard it at a disco".

The famous response to the question posed in the chorus was non developed by the band.[eleven] [6] [12] Neeson recalled that he kickoff heard the response at Mount Isa in 1983 and was "a fleck shocked."[13] Thinking it was a criticism of the ring, he asked audience members about it. They responded that the chant had its origins at a disco in Sydney where the DJ would decline the book to encourage the audience response.[vii] [6]
Although it is a famous audition chant in Australian rock music history, the exact origins of it are lost.[14] In May 2014 Rick Brewster opined, "I don't recollect information technology will always be solved because too many people put their manus up and said 'I started it' and we don't believe any of it. We simply call back information technology'due south funny, it's the bush telegraph actually. The whole country was doing it and and so we found when nosotros went overseas the people in America were doing it as well."[13] Neeson noted that "it'south become the audience'due south song, information technology doesn't belong to the band anymore".[9]
The song and its response have become an iconic part of Australian civilisation, such that the song may be played past any ring anywhere in Australia with the dirge sung by whatever crowds are nowadays.[11] [thirteen]
In 1999, Neeson performed the song during a "Tour of Duty concert" for Australian troops in Democratic republic of timor-leste. The audition responded with the dirge while Australia's Governor-General, then commander of the INTERFET forces in E Timor, Peter Cosgrove, E Timorese spokesman Jose Ramos Horta and Roman Catholic Bishop Belo were in attendance. When asked by Bishop Belo what the crowd was singing, Cosgrove responded "Well Lord Bishop I really tin can't quite brand information technology out," adding in a retelling of the story, "Then Ramos Horta looked at me and I could tell that he could make it out!"[xv]
